Joana developed her PhD at University of Aveiro and the Swiss Ornithological Institute. She is exploring phenology and migratory strategies of European bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) breeding in Portugal. Nest microhabitat, nestling development and success, diet and prey availability are other topics of interest.
